What was claimed
Arnold said he saw nine crescent-shaped objects flying in formation past Mount Rainier, faster than any known aircraft of 1947.
What is on the record
The report is the origin of the phrase “flying saucer.” It is documented in contemporary press and later Air Force files. Speed and shape remain a witness account. The Twining memo, written months later, treated disc reports as a real subject of study — not a finding that Arnold’s objects were extraterrestrial.
Kenneth Arnold, a fire-control businessman and experienced private pilot, was flying a CallAir A-2 from Chehalis to Yakima when he detoured toward Mount Rainier to search for a downed C-46. About 3 p.m. he saw a flash, then nine objects flying in an echelon, weaving as if linked, between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams.
He timed their passage against the peaks and estimated a speed far above any known aircraft. He later told the East Oregonian they flew “like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water.” Wire services shortened that to “flying saucers,” and the modern wave of reports began within days.
The Army Air Forces and later writers offered pelicans, mirages, and secret aircraft. Arnold never withdrew the report. It remains the index case for the postwar catalogue: a named witness, a clear afternoon, and a description that outran the language of the time.
