A Brazilian town reported a crashed craft and a captured creature. The army was in the streets. The official story is a circus wolf, the town’s story is not.

In January 1996 residents of Varginha reported a crippled craft and, separately, a brown, oily-skinned being with red eyes in a vacant lot, seen by three young women. Firefighters and then the army were said to have taken something away. A marine, Vitor da Silva, later claimed to have guarded a creature at a medical facility; a doctor, Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues, collected statements. Officials said the “creature” was a runaway circus wolf and the military presence was routine.
The case is messy, late, and thick with second-hand testimony. It is in the catalogue because a whole town still tells a version of it, because soldiers were photographed in the streets, and because the Brazilian military has never produced a document that settles the week.
No public photograph of a being has held up. The written accounts are many, and they do not agree on every point, which is how a town remembers a shock.
