On May 3, 1969, 24-year-old Brazilian Army soldier Jose Antonio da Silva went camping and fishing alone near a lagoon at Bebedouro in Matozinhos, Minas Gerais. Around 3 p.m. he was struck by a beam of light from bushes, causing cramps and paralysis. Small helmeted humanoids about 1.2 meters tall in overalls seized him and took him aboard a craft. He described being transported, interacting with the beings including a taller leader, and later being deposited near Vitoria, Espirito Santo, after several days. Lame and disoriented, he made his way back by train to Belo Horizonte. On May 11 he was reunited with family. Ufologists including Hulvio Brant Aleixo interviewed him that evening; press reports followed on May 16. On May 26, ufologists and military police conducted an on-site reconstruction with da Silva at Bebedouro. He later claimed a second brief encounter at his home.
