On the afternoon of June 24, 1947, experienced pilot Kenneth Arnold was flying his CallAir near Mount Rainier, Washington, at about 9,500 feet when he spotted a bright flash. He observed a chain of nine shiny, metallic, saucer-shaped objects without tails flying in an echelon formation. They weaved erratically between mountain peaks like a skipping saucer on water. Arnold timed their travel from Rainier to Adams (about 50 miles) at 1 minute 42 seconds, calculating roughly 1,200 mph—far exceeding known aircraft. He reported the sighting immediately upon landing, leading to widespread media coverage and the coining of 'flying saucer.'
