On the public record, and still open. A claim, paper, or film — not a finding that it was ours, and not a finding that it was not.

Original negatives analyzed by photogrammetrists; published in LIFE magazine, June 1950.

What was claimed

Paul and Evelyn Trent photographed a metallic disc-shaped object hovering and moving slowly near their farm. The images were published in LIFE magazine and analyzed extensively. The Condon Report listed the photos as unexplained. The Trents were considered credible and did not seek to profit from the images.

What is on the record

This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.

On the evening of May 11, 1950, around 7:30–7:45 p.m., Evelyn Trent was feeding animals on their farm near McMinnville when she spotted a bright, metallic, disc-shaped object moving slowly across the sky. She alerted her husband Paul, who retrieved his Kodak camera from the house. Paul took two photographs in quick succession as the object hovered and then moved away. The images show a bright, silvery, disc-like craft with a dome or turret against the background of their farm, telephone wires, and barn. The next day the Trents showed the photos to a local banker, who took them to the newspaper. The story went national via the AP and was featured in LIFE magazine. Extensive photographic analysis by researchers including William Hartmann for the Condon Committee concluded the images were consistent with a large, distant, metallic object and difficult to fake with 1950 technology. The Trents passed polygraph tests and maintained their account without seeking financial gain. The case remains one of the most scrutinized and credible photographic UFO records.

Could this have been ours?

The known sky, that night.

Before Sputnik the known lights were planets, meteors, aircraft, and balloons. No station. No Starlink.

Always

Aircraft, balloons, meteors

Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.

Unidentified

Multiple mine workers observed and photographed a bright, flattened silvery disk performing vertical and horizontal maneuvers at about 600 meters altitude for roughly two hours in clear skies. CEFAA analyzed the images and concluded it was a genuine UFO after ruling out conventional explanations.
