Brazilian Navy report confirming the photographs and witness accounts.
What was claimed
Crew members aboard the Brazilian Navy ship Almirante Saldanha, including Captain Viegas and photographer Almiro Baraúna, observed a Saturn-shaped object maneuvering near the island. Baraúna took four photographs that were developed on board, analyzed by the Navy, and publicly released by the Brazilian government.
What is on the record
This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.
On January 16, 1958, while the Brazilian Navy research vessel NE Almirante Saldanha was anchored off Trindade Island during an International Geophysical Year expedition, several crew members and civilians on deck spotted a bright object approaching from the sea. It was described as a flattened sphere encircled by a ring, glowing with a phosphorescent light, moving at high speed. Professional photographer Almiro Baraúna, invited by the Navy for underwater work, took six exposures with his Rolleiflex camera; four frames showed the object clearly against the island background. The film was developed aboard ship in the presence of officers. The Brazilian Navy initially kept the matter internal but later vouched for the authenticity of the photos after laboratory analysis. President Juscelino Kubitschek authorized their release to the press. The case includes official Navy reports, eyewitness statements from Captain Jose Teobaldo Viegas and others, and remains one of the few instances of a government publicly releasing UFO photographs.

Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.
