Two California Highway Patrol officers watched a large, lighted object that swept a red beam over their patrol car and the countryside.

Officers Charles A. Carson and Stanley Scott, on a night patrol east of Red Bluff, saw a lighted object drop out of the sky and approach. They described an oblong craft with lamps at the ends, a red beam that swept the ground, and silent, abrupt motion. Other officers and civilians in Tehama County reported lights in the same hour. Air Force radar at Red Bluff was said to have been down.
Blue Book called it a refraction of Mars and Capella. The officers, interviewed on the record, did not accept stars. A patrol log, two trained observers, and a beam on the road.
