On the public record, and still open. A claim, paper, or film — not a finding that it was ours, and not a finding that it was not.
What was claimed
During a total solar eclipse, multiple video cameras in Mexico recorded bright objects in the darkened sky. The tapes flooded television for months.
What is on the record
This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.
On 11 July 1991 Mexico City stood in the path of totality. Along with the eclipse, amateur and news cameras recorded one or more bright, disk-like objects hanging in the dark sky. Jaime Maussan collected dozens of tapes. Some objects are Venus. Some have not been so cleanly named. The mass of independent video, shot by people who were pointing at the sun, is the unusual feature.
Skeptics note that a sky full of cameras will catch balloons, Venus, and artifacts. Defenders note objects that appear to move against the background in ways planets do not. The file is almost entirely moving image, little of it chain-of-custody.
It remains the largest amateur-video mass sighting of the 1990s, and a reminder that “photographed” and “identified” are not the same word.
Could this have been ours?
The known sky, that night.
Satellites were already up. The station was not. Starlink was not.
Always
Aircraft, balloons, meteors
Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.
Orbit · Space — the desks for lights that are already named.
