In May 1971, near the coastal town of Caleta Buena north of Antofagasta, Chile, three members of the Carabineros (national police) observed an unidentified object for approximately eight hours. The object remained stationary about 2 km offshore, brightly lit and changing position with great speed at times. When it approached within 150 meters of the beach, the officers described it as roughly 20 meters in diameter with a helicopter-like illuminated cabin featuring window-like sections. It hovered approximately 30 meters above the sea surface. A detailed handwritten report was later filed by a retired police colonel who was in service at the time, and a formal police report was submitted to Northern Headquarters in Antofagasta. The event was corroborated by dozens of geographically independent civilian witnesses. Press accounts and the official police documentation confirm the officers had not consumed alcohol. The case is considered one of the strongest documented police UFO sightings in Latin America.
