Trans-en-Provence Landing Trace

Sighting photograph. Ground trace photographed by French gendarmerie after the landing — GEIPAN / CNES

On the public record, and still open. A claim, paper, or film — not a finding that it was ours, and not a finding that it was not.
GEPAN Technical Note No. 16 details lab results showing mechanical pressure of 4-5 tons, heating to 300-600°C, and anomalous plant biochemistry inconsistent with conventional explanations.
What was claimed
A farmer witnessed a metallic disc-shaped object land in his field, leaving physical traces. Gendarmes and French space agency (GEPAN) investigated with soil and plant samples analyzed in multiple labs showing anomalous effects.
What is on the record
This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.
On the afternoon of January 8, 1981, Renato Nicolaï was working on his property in Trans-en-Provence when he heard a strange whistling sound. He observed a metallic, saucer-shaped object approximately 2.5 meters in diameter land about 50 meters away on a lower terrace. The object was grayish with a thick rim and prominent circular features underneath resembling landing pads. It remained on the ground for 30–40 seconds before lifting off vertically and departing rapidly without noise or exhaust. Nicolaï reported it to the gendarmerie the next day. Officers documented a circular ground trace about 2 meters in diameter with scrape marks and took soil and wild alfalfa samples. GEPAN (later GEIPAN) conducted a thorough investigation involving multiple laboratories. Analyses revealed significant soil compaction consistent with heavy pressure, heating effects, and biochemical changes in the plants (reduced chlorophyll, altered mineral content) that could not be fully explained by known natural or human causes. The case remains one of the most documented physical trace events.
Could this have been ours?
The known sky, that night.
Satellites were already up. The station was not. Starlink was not.

Aircraft, balloons, meteors
Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.

Retired farmer Renato Nicolaï observed a lead-colored saucer-shaped craft land briefly in a field near his property, then lift off and depart. Physical traces including compressed and scorched soil and affected vegetation were documented and analyzed by GEPAN laboratories, showing biochemical changes inconsistent with known causes.
