GEPAN technical reports (1981–1983) detailing soil compression and plant biochemical analysis.
What was claimed
Retired farmer Renato Nicolaï observed a lead-colored saucer-shaped craft land briefly in a field near his property, then lift off and depart. Physical traces including compressed and scorched soil and affected vegetation were documented and analyzed by GEPAN laboratories, showing biochemical changes inconsistent with known causes. One of the best-investigated physical trace cases by the French go
What is on the record
This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.
On January 8, 1981, at approximately 5:00 p.m., 55-year-old Renato Nicolaï was working in his garden in Trans-en-Provence, Var, France, when he heard a slight whistling sound. He looked up and saw a disc-shaped or saucer-like craft, about 2–3 meters in diameter and lead-gray in color, descending rapidly and landing or hovering very low (about 1–2 meters) in a field roughly 50–80 meters away. The object remained on or near the ground for a few seconds before rising vertically with the same whistling sound, tilted slightly, and accelerated away rapidly toward the northeast, disappearing behind trees. Nicolaï immediately reported the event to the local Gendarmerie. Investigators found a circular impression about 2.4 meters in diameter with compressed soil and scorched vegetation inside and around the perimeter. Samples of soil and plants (including alfalfa) were taken and analyzed by multiple French government laboratories under GEPAN. Results showed significant biochemical changes in the plants, including dehydration, chlorophyll reduction, and other anomalies not explainable by conventional mechanical pressure, heat, or known pollutants. No radiation above background was found. The case remains unexplained and is considered a landmark in official French UFO investigations.
