On November 11, 2014, during a routine daytime training flight off the coast of Valparaíso, a Chilean Navy AS532 Cougar helicopter crew detected an object on their WESCAM MX-15 infrared/FLIR camera. The pilot and technician observed and filmed the object for over nine minutes. Visible only in infrared, it appeared elongated with hot spots and twice emitted intense thermal plumes or discharges. The object did not appear on radar, ignored radio hails, and eventually disappeared into clouds. The footage was turned over to Chile's CEFAA (Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena), which conducted a two-year investigation involving multiple government agencies, astronomers, and physicists. In 2017, the Navy and CEFAA publicly released the video and report, concluding it was an anomalous aerial phenomenon with no conventional explanation.
