What was claimed
Witnesses watched an object with four lights descend into the harbour. The RCMP logged it as a possible aircraft crash. Divers found nothing.

Around 11:20 p.m. several people, including a group of teenagers and an RCMP constable, watched four yellow lights on a dark object tilt and go into the water off Shag Harbour. There was a splash and an orange glow on the surface. The RCMP treated it as a crash. The Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax had no missing aircraft.
Divers from the navy and RCMP searched. They found no wreckage. A foam on the water was reported and not identified. Canadian government memos, later released, call the object a UFO in plain language — one of the few official documents to do so without a wink.
The case is a radar-silent splashdown with police on the shore. The file is thin and unusually honest: they looked, they did not find a plane, they wrote “UFO.”
