Standing

Unidentified

On the public record, and still open. A claim, paper, or film — not a finding that it was ours, and not a finding that it was not.

Mrs. Ethel May Field, 62, a housewife, had gone out to the back garden to take in washing from the clothes-line, when she heard a humming sound which prompted her to look at the sky. She encountered a round object with a dome on top. Standing inside the windows of the object were two humanoid occupants.

What was claimed

Housewife Ethel May Field saw a round object with a dome hovering in her garden. Through windows in the dome, she observed two humanoid figures in silver suits and pointed headgear looking out. The craft emitted a humming sound, grey glow, and beams before departing.

What is on the record

This file is a working record — a report, not a verdict. Official paper, if any, is linked where we have it.

In late September 1977, around 11 PM, Mrs. Ethel May Field, 62, went into her back garden in Parkstone to take in washing from the clothesline. She heard a humming sound and looked up to see a round object, about 20-22 feet across, with a domed top hovering low over the garden. The dome had two large windows through which she clearly saw two humanoid figures of normal human proportions, one in each window. They wore one-piece silver suits and matching headgear that covered all but their faces, with the headwear coming to a point at the forehead and appearing separate from the suits with a collar. The figures seemed male with slender faces. The interior was brightly lit like household lighting. The object cast a greyish glow and bluish-yellow beams, caused a sensation of heat and ground vibration, and departed after 20-30 seconds. Field reported physical effects including dermatitis the following week. She was interviewed in 1978 by investigator Leslie Harris, with the case documented in press and UFO literature following the release of the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Could this have been ours?

The known sky, that night.

Satellites were already up. The station was not. Starlink was not.

Always

Aircraft, balloons, meteors

Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.

The known sky

None of the above land

Stations, trains, and planets do not set down in a field or leave a body. This file is a ground report. The known sky still has to be named. It does not answer the claim.

Orbit · Space — the desks for lights that are already named.
