Unidentified

On the public record, and still open. A claim, paper, or film — not a finding that it was ours, and not a finding that it was not.

What was claimed

The Hills described a craft, a missing interval of time, and — under later hypnosis — an examination aboard the object.

What is on the record

The sighting report and later hypnosis transcripts are in the historical file. Hypnosis is not a reliable record of events. NICAP and others documented the case as a close encounter with an unusual aftermath, not as proof of abduction.

Betty and Barney Hill were driving home to Portsmouth on U.S. 3. A bright object seemed to follow the car through the mountains. At Indian Head, Barney stopped, took binoculars, and later said he saw figures in a row of windows. They heard a beep. The next clear memory was thirty-five miles south, two hours gone.

Betty’s later dreams, and 1964 hypnosis with Dr. Benjamin Simon, produced the now-famous examination narrative and a star map she sketched, which Marjorie Fish later compared to Zeta Reticuli. Simon thought the story was a dream transferred between spouses. The Hills believed they were reporting memory.

The physical residue is thin: scuff marks on the car, a compass that spun, a torn dress. The cultural residue is large. Almost every later abduction report borrows the grammar of this night drive.

Could this have been ours?

The known sky, that night.

Satellites were already up. The station was not. Starlink was not.

Always

Aircraft, balloons, meteors

Landing lights, flares, lanterns, reentries, fireballs. They are on the known sky. They do not close a file by themselves — they are what a serious look has to hold the claim against.

The known sky

None of the above land

Stations, trains, and planets do not set down in a field or leave a body. This file is a ground report. The known sky still has to be named. It does not answer the claim.

Orbit · Space — the desks for lights that are already named.
