Around 3 a.m. on January 12, 1975, 72-year-old George O'Barski was driving home through North Hudson Park after closing his New York liquor store. His car radio suddenly filled with static as a brightly lit object, described as a puffed-up pancake or domed disc about 30 feet across and 6–9 feet high with a band of windows, descended and hovered or landed in the park about 100 feet ahead. A ladder or ramp extended, and about ten small figures (3–3.5 feet tall), wearing one-piece dark 'snow-suit' uniforms with helmets and gloves, quickly descended like children on a fire escape. They moved rapidly, using small shovels and square containers to dig up and collect soil and sod from the ground. After 3–4 minutes they re-entered the craft, which rose and departed. O'Barski was terrified and drove away. Later investigation by Budd Hopkins and Ted Bloecher found corroborating witnesses, including a doorman at the nearby Stonehenge apartments who saw a similar bright object, and physical traces of triangular patches where sod had been removed. A second witness, a truck driver, reported related events in the same area.
