What was claimed
A disk was said to explode over the sea off Ubatuba. Fragments recovered from the beach were unusually pure magnesium.

A letter to a Rio newspaper described a disk that came in off the Atlantic, was approached by a witness on the beach, and exploded, showering bright metal. Samples reached the journalist Ibrahim Sued and then Dr. Olavo Fontes. Laboratory work in Brazil and later in the United States found magnesium of high purity, with strontium in some analyses that was odd for commercial alloys of the day.
Skeptics note a chain of custody that starts with a letter, and magnesium flares as a mundane source. The metal still exists in collections. The file is a fragment more than a sighting — which is why it stays.
