What was claimed

A fireball seen over several states was said to have fallen into the woods. Villagers described an acorn-shaped object and a military cordon.

Late in the afternoon a brilliant fireball crossed the Great Lakes and Ontario. NASA and the Air Force called it a meteor. In Kecksburg, people said something had come down in the woods. Volunteer firefighters and local reporters described a bronze, acorn-shaped object with a band of writing, and then the Army arriving, sealing the site, and leaving with a covered object on a flatbed.

NASA later said it had searched and found nothing. FOIA cases decades afterward produced meteorite-related paperwork and little else. A 2005 NASA statement named a meteor or a re-entering Cosmos 96, though Cosmos 96 is generally held to have re-entered hours earlier over Canada.

The written village accounts are consistent with one another and at odds with the official nothing-was-there. No public photograph of the object in the woods has ever surfaced.

Long Prairie Rocket and Creatures

Radio announcer James F. Townsend encountered a 30-40 foot tall rocket-shaped object blocking the road. His car engine, lights, and radio died. Three small brownish-black creatures with tripod legs emerged, stood under a bright light, and stared at him before re-entering the object, which then departed vertically. The car restarted spontaneously afterward. Reported to authorities and investigated.
