What was claimed
U.S. Air Force personnel at RAF Woodbridge described lights in Rendlesham Forest, a metallic object, and later a beam of light on the base.
What is on the record
Halt’s memo is real official paper. The UK later released files. Condign did not treat it as an extraterrestrial landing. Radiation readings, sketches, and testimony are the record — not a recovered vehicle.
In the early hours of 26 December, security airmen from RAF Woodbridge went into Rendlesham Forest after reports of a possible crash. They described a triangular or conical object among the trees, with colored lights, that moved through the forest and toward the coast. Two nights later the deputy base commander, Lt. Col. Charles Halt, led a second party. His handwritten memo to the Ministry of Defence, and a micro-cassette recorded in the woods, are in the public file.
Halt’s tape includes radiation readings, a flashing light in the trees, and objects in the sky that “look like the devil’s work.” Skeptics point at Orford Ness lighthouse and a poacher. The airmen, including Halt, have not adopted that explanation.
It is the most document-rich close encounter in the British record: a lieutenant colonel, a memo, a tape, plaster casts of impressions, and a forest that still draws walkers with torches.
