Anti-aircraft batteries fired more than a thousand rounds at unidentified objects over wartime Los Angeles. The Army and Navy disagreed in public the next day.

A few hours after a submarine shelling of Ellwood, air-raid sirens woke Los Angeles. Searchlights converged on objects moving slowly along the coast. The 37th Coast Artillery Brigade fired from 3 a.m. until dawn. There were no downed aircraft. Five civilians died in the panic and traffic. A widely printed photograph shows beams meeting on a bright core above the city.

Secretary of the Navy Knox called it a false alarm. The Army’s statement left room for unidentified aircraft. Japanese records after the war showed no raid. Balloon, nerves, and weather have all been offered. The file is the barrage itself: a city at war, guns in action, and no wreckage to count.
