On the night of 17 November 1896, dozens of people in Sacramento described a light moving against the wind, some adding a dark cigar-shaped body and a searchlight. Similar reports ran through the winter and into the spring of 1897, from California to the Plains, with inventors’ names, passenger claims, and at least one crash story attached.
Most of the wave was newspaper copy feeding newspaper copy. A few nights — Sacramento, Omaha, Chicago — have enough independent witnesses to remain on the file. Whatever flew, if anything did, it was described in the language of the coming century’s airships. The clippings are the document.
