Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) in the UK Air Defence Region (Project Condign)

Commissioned during a 1996 policy review of MoD's handling of UAP sightings, this three-volume report examined available data to determine if UAP posed a defence threat to the United Kingdom or offered opportunities for technology exploitation. The study reviewed historical reports, statistical trends, and possible explanations including meteorological, astronomical, and novel atmospheric phenomena such as plasmas. It concluded there was no evidence of a threat to UK air defence, no proof of extraterrestrial origin, and that further resources should not be devoted to routine investigation of sightings. The report recommended that MoD continue its policy of no longer investigating UAP unless they indicated a clear defence significance, consistent with the finding that the phenomenon did not warrant dedicated intelligence effort.
