Wilbert Smith memo — Project Magnet
Department of Transport (Canada) · Canada
Ledger illustration of the record — not a scan of the original paper. — Night Ledger illustration of the file
Wilbert Smith, a senior radio engineer at the Canadian Department of Transport, wrote an internal memo after conversations in Washington. He said the saucers were the most classified subject in the United States, more so than the hydrogen bomb, and that the Canadian government should study the magnetic aspects of the reports. Project Magnet followed, a small official effort, later closed.
The memo is Canadian paper, not American confirmation. Smith’s later public claims went further than the department would. The document is still a dated, named, internal record that a allied government treated the subject as worth a desk.
