Swedish Defence Staff Report on Ghost Rockets (December 1946)

During May–December 1946 the Swedish Defence Staff received nearly 1,000 reports of luminous objects and rocket-like phenomena, many appearing spool-shaped, sometimes with wings. Radar and visual sightings were concentrated in central Sweden; simultaneous luminous events occurred on specific dates. Approximately 100 impact reports were investigated, with 30 fragments examined by the Defence Research Institute; none could be conclusively linked to rocket projectiles or known technology and were generally attributed to other sources. The committee concluded that while many observations were likely celestial or misidentifications, a portion involved real physical objects that could not be dismissed as imagination. The investigation was deemed unsuccessful with current resources and was not continued in the same form. The report was later shared with U.S. authorities.
