UFO Sightings at Weapons Testing Site, Woomera (Security Report on Wewak Sightings)

Dated July 1960, the two-page report by security officer JJA Hanlon describes sightings on 15 July 1960 of a bright object or light in the vicinity of the Wewak site, part of the top-secret Woomera weapons testing range. Numerous witnesses including WRE staff, Commonwealth Police, and others were interviewed. The investigation consulted scientific experts and considered various explanations, including meteors, satellite re-entry debris, static electricity effects on weather balloons, reflections from vehicle lights on a temperature inversion layer, or other conventional causes. No physical evidence was recovered, and the report does not conclude the object was extraordinary or extraterrestrial. It reflects the RAAF and Department of Supply's policy of thoroughly checking sightings near sensitive defense sites for any possible security implications, ultimately attributing most such events to mundane phenomena while maintaining records for completeness. This document is representative of Australian military/scientific handling of UFO reports in the 1950s–60s, which found no threat or anomalous technology.
